Lodestar Center Expands in Southern Arizona

| April 19, 2012

This year’s best news for the nonprofit sector in Southern Arizona? The Lodestar Center is expanding into our area!

Lodestar is Arizona State University’s college for the nonprofit and philanthropic professions. The nonprofit sector, though often overlooked,  is an economic powerhouse that grew steadily through the current recession. There are over 3,200 public charities in Southern Arizona (Pima, Cochise and Santa Cruz counties) with over $4.3 billion in total revenue. The philanthropic sector is a major employer and engages much of the community as volunteers and donors. Cause-focused organizations are an important advocacy channel for the public good. Nothing engages a wider swath of the public; nearly 240,000 Pima County residents volunteered in 2010*.  Tutors, runners and walkers, hospice volunteers and community gardeners – all engage in public service through nonprofit organizations. It’s one of the great American traditions.

Having a Lodestar presence in Southern Arizona increases access to programs that promote professional advancement and the training of the current as well as the next generation of executives, fundraisers, volunteer managers, and others that will oversee our charities. How awesome is that?

Lodestar offers both degree and  certificate programs as well as support services and a wide range of networking opportunities, conferences, and research data for nonprofits. Lodestar recently published the Scope of the Nonprofit Sector: Southern Arizona Edition, a guide to the health and vibrancy of nonprofits seen from a local perspective. Lodestar has some of the most experienced and knowledgeable teachers in the field to teach the science and best practices of nonprofit management.

Can you tell I’m a fan?

It is my privilege to work with people who have a passion to improve our community. The obstacles for many of them, especially the small organizations, are daunting.  I’m thankful that Lodestar, a longtime asset and leader in nonprofit management education in the Phoenix area, is now expanding its presence in Southern Arizona with local conferences and classes. Thank you also to Tucson Foundations – with a special nod to ASU Lodestar Alumni Jennifer Lohse – and TEP/UniSource Energy for your seminal work and support in bringing this vital resource to Tucson.

Support Tucson’s Community of Good. There are some really good people out there working quite hard to make our shared community a better place.
