Volunteer to Remember 9/11 – Day of Service Volunteer Opportunities

| September 9, 2011

9-11 flagDo you want to put a little elbow grease, or shoe rubber, in for a good cause to remember and commemorate 9/11? Here are a few local Day of Service opportunities that might be of interest.

World Care 9/11 Walk

World Care was at ground zero providing supplies and help. The proceeds from this event benefit the Civilian Emergency Relief Center. Registration begins at 7am at Reid Park. Walk-up registration is $35, free for kids under 10, and includes a T-shirt! There will be events and family fun all day following the walk. Check out details at Worldcare and watch the YouTube video of their PSA.

Yard Work at the Desert Ashram

How about working with the earth in a serene retreat? Desert Ashram is looking for volunteers who would like to spend some time raking and weeding the desert retreat, 7am to noon. They are providing cool drinks and, I’m sure, a cool environment to work in. More information here.

Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Run/Walk

Stephen Siller was a New York firefighter who, although off duty, returned to his fire station and responded to the Twin Towers. According to the website,

“The mission is to follow Stephen’s footsteps through support of children who have lost a parent, firefighters, and military who have been seriously injured and sacrifice their quality of life in the line of duty.”

The event also benefits the National Fallen Firefighters Association. The event begins at 6:30am, at Crossroads at Silverbell District Park, 7548 N. Silverbell Road. See the website Tunnel to Towers for further information.

Serve Our Servicemen

Esperanza En Escalante provides services to homeless veterans. They are asking for help painting, cleaning, and sprucing up their grounds on Sunday, noon to 4pm. They are welcoming folks to “just show up” and ask for Tom Kirchen. Visit their website here.   UPDATE: This opportunity seems to have been removed from the VSA website. They were unable to provide details of the event by phone.
