War Veterans Made Up the Occupy Movement of 1932 and the Army Drove Them Out

| December 20, 2011

Do you remember learning about this “occupy” movement, veterans and their families marching on and occupying Washington DC in 1932? President Herbert Hoover ordered the Army to clear out the veterans, and General MacArthur moved in with troops, mounted cavalry, and even tanks. The active Army gassed and burned out the Army veterans.

Why were the veterans protesting? They wanted to be paid for their Service Certificates, a bonus payment of $1 a day for domestic service and $1.25 a day for overseas service. President Hoover and Republican congressmen opposed the payments because taxes would have to be raised to cover the payout costs. This short documentary film shows the tear gas attacks, the ranks of mounted cavalry, and even tanks rolling against the veterans. It’s a chilling sight.
